New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) ensures safe and convenient commuting of people and transfer of goods. NJDOT owns, manages and maintains numerous lane-miles of roadways, bridges, tunnels, rails and also responsible for air and water quality, communities and roadsides cleanliness. NJDOT implemented a new approach called the Asset Management, which is a systematic cost effective method of upgrading and maintaining physical and infrastructure assets. New Jersey Road Transportation

The road transportation in New Jersey comprises of several interstate highways, state routes, bridges and tunnels. NJDOT administers numerous state highways, tunnels and many moveable bridges to provide easy and safe connectivity to various cities and states. New Jersey Transit serves as the state's main intrastate public transportation. NJ transit oversees 3 separate light rail systems, 11 commuter rail lines, and a state-wide bus system.

Each segment of roads maintained by the state is assigned a number, officially called State Highway Route X, which is also popularly known as Route X by the NJDOT and the general public. Some of the major interstate highways in New Jersey are I‑76, I‑78, I‑80, I‑95, I‑195, I‑278, I‑280, I‑287, I‑295, I‑495, I‑676, I‑695 and I‑895.



New Jersey Turnpike: The New Jersey Turnpike, NJTP is a toll road that is operated by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the authority has designated NJTP among the top 6 busiest toll roads and most frequently used highways in the nation. The southern terminus is located at I-295 around Pennsville and Carneys Point's border while its northern terminus is at the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, Bergen County.

Garden State Parkway: The Garden State Parkway, GSP is a toll parkway of limited access that is commonly known as the Garden State or the Parkway. The highway extends from the Montvale to Cape May, the southernmost tip of New Jersey. Its name refers to New Jersey's nickname, the "Garden State." Most New Jersey residents refer to it as simply "the Parkway" or "the Garden State".

Interstate 76: Begins from I-71 interchange west of Akron, Ohio and east to I-295 in Gloucester City, New Jersey.

Interstate 78: Union Township - Lebanon County - Pennsylvania to New York City.

Interstate 80: New York City Metropolitan Area - westward to San Francisco, California.

Interstate 95: Scudder Falls Bridge - south into Bucks County, Pennsylvania - Route 29 interchange - heads northeast past suburban development - northwest of the airport before coming into Hopewell Township.

Bridges and Tunnels

Tolls collected in New Jersey is one way toll, meaning, no toll need to be paid while entering into New Jersey, but must pay when exiting the state. Tolls are levied in both directions (enter and exit) for the Dingman's Ferry Bridge and the Delaware River-Turnpike Toll Bridge.

• The intrastate pass - It is valid for rides between local routes within New Jersey only.

New Jersey Water Transportation

The water transportation in New Jersey is one of the most important modes of transportation in the state. It serves as an important system for passenger transportation and sight seeing and offers many recreational activities.
